OLE Database
OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) is Microsoft's framework for a compound document technology. A compound document can contain visual and information objects of all kinds: text, calendars, animations, sound, motion video, 3-D, continually updated news, controls, and so forth. Each desktop object is an independent program entity that can interact with a user and also communicate with other objects on the desktop. Part of Microsoft's ActiveX technologies, OLE takes advantage and is part of a larger, more general concept, the Component Object Model (COM) and its distributed version, DCOM.
Wonderware's Factelligence® provides a standard Data Source Connector (DSC) via OLE DB connectors. OLE DB is a set of interfaces for data access. It is Microsoft's component database architecture that provides universal data integration over an enterprise's network, from mainframe to desktop, regardless of the data type. Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) industry-standard data access interface continues to provide a unified way to access relational data as part of the OLE DB specification. OLE DB provides a flexible and efficient database architecture that offers applications, compilers and other database components efficient access to Microsoft® and third-party data stores. OLE DB is the fundamental Component Object Model (COM) building block for storing and retrieving records and unifies Microsoft's strategy for database connectivity. It is used throughout Microsoft's line of applications and data stores. OLE DB defines interfaces for accessing and manipulating all types of data.
OLE DB connections can be created with databases or tools such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle databases and Microsoft Project, among others. Data can be mined from various data sources and displayed on one common user interface within the Portal. Wonderware Factelligence provides a direct connection to an unlimited number of OLE DB data sources.
